Sony and Fujitsu Develop Blockchain Platform to Fight Fake Educational Qualifications

Japanese multinational conglomerate Sony and IT equipment services firm Fujitsu have created an encrypted database for educational proficiency documents, The Asahi Shimbun reports on Feb. 26. The database, which reportedly employs blockchain technology, is used to prevent forgeries of language proficiency documents, which some foreigners purportedly use to receive resident status to study in Japan. Foreigners must submit a Japanese language proficiency certificate to the Immigration Bureau in order to receive resident status to study in Japan. Said certificates can be issued by Japanese educational institutions abroad. Japanese language schools within the country will submit the certificates on behalf of institutions overseas. Illegal copies of the language certificates have reportedly been found in several different countries. The Asahi Shimbun states that students without proper language qualifications can face difficulties in their daily lives in Japan. The two firms created the platform by combining Fujitsu’s online learning system with a blockchain developed by Sony subsidiary Sony Global Education Inc. In using the platform, Japanese language schools can compare certificates with data registered on the blockchain in order to verify that the documents are authentic.

Jamie Dimon: JPM Coin Could ‘One Day’ See Consumer Use

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has suggested that JPM Coin, the megabank’s planned U.S. dollar-backed token, could eventually be a consumer product. According to a CNBC report, at JPMorgan’s annual investor day, Dimon said: “JPMorgan Coin could be internal, could be commercial, it could one day be consumer.” For the foreseeable future, however, the token is likely to serve only business-to-business use cases. When bank revealed the plan to trial JPM Coin earlier this month, Umar Farooq, the bank’s blockchain lead, described three applications, all internal: replace wire transfers for international payments by large corporate clients; provide instant settlement for securities issuances; and replace U.S. dollars held by subsidiaries of major corporations using JPMorgan’s treasury services. An FAQ released by JPMorgan at the time hinted at the commercial possibilities, noting that while JPM Coin will run on the bank’s proprietary blockchain Quorum, it also “will be operable on all standard Blockchain networks.”

Swiss Bank Julius Baer to Offer Digital Asset Services

Swiss private bank Julius Baer has partnered with a cryptocurrency banking startup to offer digital asset services later in 2019. Announcing the news on Tuesday, Julius Baer said it has partnered with SEBA Crypto AG and will utilize platform to offer storage, transaction and investment solutions for digital assets to meet growing demand from its clients. The arrangement will come into effect once SEBA receives a banking and securities dealer license from the country’s financial regulator, the Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). SEBA filed its application with FINMA last June and plans to go live with crypto banking operations in Q2 of this year, according to a roadmap on its website. The firm is also preparing for an initial coin offering (ICO) in Q3.

Widow of QuadrigaCX CEO Denies Hiding Assets from Crypto Creditors

Jennifer Robertson, widow of QuadrigaCX CEO Gerald Cotten, asked a judge to put a restructuring specialist in charge at the failed crypto exchange, saying her management role has brought unwanted public attention. In an affidavit filed with the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Canada, Robertson asked for Peter Wedlake, a retired partner and senior vice president at audit firm Grant Thornton, to be appointed chief restructuring officer (CRO). In this role, Wedlake would take charge of Quadriga’s efforts to recover some $136 million in cryptocurrencies said to be held in inaccessible cold wallets. QuadrigaCX also wants another 45 to 60 days to look for its missing cryptocurrencies.
